News has emerged that Facebook just suffered a major hacking recently. According to the company, it discovered that a security issue that involved over 90 million users on the 25th of September. This involves the exploitation of a feature in Facebook that allows users to view their own profile as other people.

Engineers that discovered the security problem quickly logged out 50 million accounts, or roughly about 2.5% of Facebook’s total userbase. The ‘View As’ feature was supposed to give users more control over their privacy. It gives them the tool to see their own profile as if they were someone else, showing glaring deficiencies in security along the way. Instead, the same feature gives hackers control over their complete profile by stealing Facebook access tokens. At the same time, the company also looked over an additional 40 million accounts that may also be affected by the same exploited bug.

Facebook took this breech rather seriously; it has contacted the authorities to open investigation over the hack, and has since logged out affected user accounts. The company has since turned off the ‘View As’ as a precaution. The company also admitted that the stem or the problem started thanks to the new video uploading feature that it introduced in 2017. In the press statement, the company is still investigating the extent of the breech. It is checking how the accounts or data from the affected accounts were used (or misused).

“We’re taking it really seriously,” Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s chief executive, said in a conference call with reporters. “I’m glad we found this, but it definitely is an issue that this happened in the first place.”

This new incident is on the back of long-term aftermath of data-related scandals, both by the Russians and Cambridge Analytica. With over 2 billion people using Facebook every month, it is now a race to assure both users and investors that the company is worthy in handling the personal information collected over the years by it of its users.
