No, there wasn’t actually a Popularity Contest among social media platforms. If there were, we already know which one would be on top.
In a survey complied by Statista, Facebook dominates against four of the world’s largest social media and messaging services (WhatsApp, Messenger, WeChat and Instagram). Judged solely on its own merits, Facebook now counts two billion users per month while WhatsApp and Messenger both recently closed the one billion user Rubicon.
Of course, the results were not based on the number of users, but by the online activities that the platforms receive, such as likes and comments. In the US alone, the social media ad revenue is expected to top US$17.8 billion this year, with further growth pencilled in for 2018 and the years ahead, with Facebook being the chief beneficiary of that trend.
