The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) tournament in Malaysia saw Malaysia’s Geek Fam winning the top prize with a total of RM103,000 (USD25,000) in prize money. The team will represent Malaysia in the upcoming Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asia Cup (MSC) in the Philippines. Singapore’s EVOS Esports SG won the runner-up spot with a prize money of RM49,600 (USD12,000) and they will be representing Singapore in MSC 2019. The competition ran for a total of four months with two days of exciting Playoffs action over 20 and 21 April with about 60,000 fans supporting the event at the Blue Atrium of Sunway Pyramid.
Geek Fam defeated EVOS Esports SG 3-1 in the finals to take home the championship while EVOS Esports SG, Bigetron SG, Resurgence came in at 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. Season 2 champions Reborn and MPL debutants NARA Esports SG were the joint 5th-6th place winners, while Malaysian fan favourite Bosskurr Gaming and newcomers XPAX X-Assins finished at the joint 7th-8th placing.
Three Malaysian teams lost during the first day of the Playoffs, leaving Geek Fam as the sole Malaysian representative in the semi-finals alongside three Singaporean powerhouses. However, Malaysian fans rallied behind Geek Fam as they edged out Bigetron SG 2-1 in the semi finals and stunned Singaporean favourites EVOS Esports SG in the Grand Final. Geek Fam’s Dominus (Nik Aqieff Bin Nik Muhd Muhyyiddin) also took home the Grand Final MVP title and a cash prize of RM4,100 (US$1,000).
“With approximately 60,000 fans in attendance at the Blue Atrium of Sunway Pyramid across both days, the MPL-MY/SG Season 3 Playoffs is the biggest and grandest MLBB esports event to take place in Malaysia thus far. We are thankful for the support from Malaysian and Singaporean fans who have brought MLBB esports to such a high level here,” said Nelson Woon, Regional Marketing Manager of Moonton.
Fans at the Playoffs were treated to fun activities, like 1v1 matches with pro players and popular Facebook Gaming streamers, free photo printouts at the MLBB-themed photo booth, as well as limited edition freebies such as customised MLBB rank badges and hero figurines. Students from Malaysia’s Institute of Art also put on a display for fans, painting a life-sized MLBB artwork over the course of two days at the Blue Atrium of Sunway Pyramid.
With MPL-MY/SG Season 3 officially coming to an end, Malaysian fans can look forward to several upcoming MLBB esports events that are just around the corner. First up is the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asia Cup (MSC), which is SEA’s most prestigious invite-only MLBB tournament happening in Manila this June 2019. The total prize pool of the upcoming MSC 2019 will be a massive US$120,000. Geek Fam, the Champions of MPL-MY/SG Season 3 and EVOS Esports SG, the top placing Singaporean team, will represent their respective countries in MSC 2019. They will go up against top teams from Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam for the title of the best MLBB team in Southeast Asia.
Announced by Nelson Woon, Regional Marketing Manager of Moonton at the Playoffs over the weekend, the MLBB World Cup is going to be Moonton’s inaugural global tournament with teams from four regions (North America, Europe, South America and Southeast Asia). Slated for Q4 in 2019, the MLBB World Cup is going to be the most coveted trophy in MLBB esports history. The venue, prize pool, and tournament format will be announced in the coming months on the MLBB Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MobileLegendsGameMalaysia.
In conjunction with the MLBB 515 Unite in-game quest, Moonton will be rolling out a nationwide roadshow and campaign for all Malaysian fans. This will feature Cosplayers in roving LED-lit trucks, a 515 Unite theme song and dance contest, exclusive limited-edition giveaways of MLBB figurines and 515 Unite Touch ‘N Go cards, as well as free pizza from Domino’s Pizza. All this will culminate in a special in-game event on 15 May 2019 where ‘all the MLBB heroes will reunite to save the world’.
“We recorded over 5 million monthly active users in Malaysia for MLBB in 2019 and we are very happy to have the support of Malaysian gamers and fans. This makes Malaysia a very important market to us. This is why for the very first time in Malaysia, we are rolling out a national-scale activity like #515Unite to engage with Malaysian MLBB fans. In addition to #515Unite, we also have exciting IP collaborations in store, so be sure to look out for us,” said Woon.
