Yahoo has come out and stated that its user account information had been stolen from the company”s network in 2014, in which it believes is a state-sponsored hacker.

Choosing to only now declare, the online tech firm says account information that include names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords  and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers could have been taken. Its investigation suggests that stolen information did not include unprotected passwords, payment card data, or bank account information; payment card data and bank account information are not stored in the system that the investigation has found to be affected.

No country has been fingered on the act, but the FBI is currently investigating the case. On why this breach was kept from the public till now is another matter in question post sale to Verizon. Maybe the new buyer is also not aware of this.
