If you’re going to end up sitting in traffic while your fare goes up, why not just pay a little extra to fly to your destination, right? That seems to be the thinking at Uber as the company’s head of products stated over the weekend. The company is seriously considering using smaller vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicles to get its customers around cities with heavy traffic.

As crazy as it sounds, the company isn’t alone. Larry Page and Airbus have both invested heavily in similar ideas, and those are just the big names.

Just like Uber’s traditional service, the VTOL ride hailing service will start off with actual human pilots, but will eventually use self-flying units to increase safety and reduce cost. Of course, the legislative and social barriers  to implementing something as ambitious as this is enormous, but remember, Uber once seemed like unfeasible too.
