Thailand is in military rule, and history dictates that any country under army management will not be ruled justly. Often not, paranoia seeps in, and citizens get thrown into prison for objecting. Is this the case in our neighboring country Thailand?

In a surprise move, the Junta has intentions to curb free internet, by setting up a single internet gateway to control inappropriate website and information flow (sounds familiar?) a clear indication of government meddling or spying on what Thais consume on the net. Many Thais have voiced their discontent and thousands have signed petition against the bill calling it draconian and even dubbing it “Great Firewall Of Thailand” reference to China’s internet censorship policy.

Watchdogs are calling it disastrous for the country, after years of government control, the internet was deregulated in 2006,opening for many operators to offer broad band service in the 80 million population country. The military coup that happened last year, assured progress and economy advancement with even unveiling plans for a regional internet hub, but is now backtracking after many of its citizens have been resentful over the military rule who were suppose to hand over the country back to a voted-in government.

Independent research firms estimate Thais enjoy speed of up to 7.5 Mbps but this will drop drastically if the service becomes a single government offered monopoly. Where will this lead to? We will keep close watch as one citizen right put “state paranoia is driving irrationality”.
