It’s been 10 years since we were graced with a Samurai Shodown game. In commemoration of SNK’s 40th anniversary, the company has announced a brand new Samurai Shodown title for the PlayStation 4, coming in 2019.
The Samurai Spirits (localised to Samurai Shodown in English) series was a fighting game franchise which started in 1993. It featured a feudal-Japan themed aesthetic with various characters engaging in weapon-based combat. Being the first new release in the series after more than a decade, SNK intends to give this game the comeback it deserves.
As such, the game will run on the Unreal Engine 4, which has also fueled other big fighting games such as DragonBall FighterZ, Tekken 7, and Street Fighter V. While the character models share some similar styles with SNK’s own recent King of Fighters XIV, the overall graphical look is certainly more polished. A unique brushstroke effect also accentuates the characters and environment, matching the Japanese roots of the series. As seen in the trailer, characters such as Haomaru, Nakoruru, Galford, and more are making a return and look better than ever.
